Found Houses began in 2015 by exploring abandoned or forgotten homes that shine in their imperfections.
Almost two years later, I am still finding houses fascinating. They have become the subject of portraiture in a sense, and offer a mirror into my own distorted feelings of self-worth and self-image. My paintings channel struggles with anxiety and depression, among other mental health issues that have impacted my life.
They speak to nostalgia while exploring disconnection, emptiness or darkness. I experiment with mark making, media combinations (including salt, string, and gel medium), and layering to add to the complexity and history behind each image.
While some might call these images sweet, they are an homage to a lifelong battle I have with what is considered beautiful, attractive, and worthy of display.
